Which Cam will Swoop In to Take on the High Flying Eagles?

on Oct 11, 2017 | 0 comments

For the second week in a row, we have an intriguing Thursday Night matchup. Is this becoming a trend or what? This game features the high flying 4 and 1 Philadephia Eagles visiting a resurgent CAMolina Panthers team that is also 4 and 1. With the way Cam Newton was playing early on in the season, it would have been hard to believe the Eagles could be a 3.5 point dog in this one, but here we are in week 6 and it is happening.

The Eagles come into this game after blowing out the Arizona Cardinals last week 34-7 behind 4 touchdown passes from Carson Wentz. Wentz has been on fire this year, putting up 300 plus passing yards in 3 of his first 5 games (and one of those was against the Chiefs). Zach Ertz has been the most consistent target for Wentz, averaging more than 6 receptions a game and 12.1 yards per reception. The rest of the receiving core has been up-and-down, with someone doing well each week behind Wentz’ arm (we are looking at you Nelson Agholor). LaGarrette Blount has been acceptable in the lead back role, racking up more yards than expected, but fewer touchdowns than expected. The Eagles defense hasn’t been the strongest, with noticeable deficiencies in the secondary, so they will likely need to outscore the Panthers to win.

Stats the Eagles Like

The Panthers have had an interesting path to their 4-1 record. Cam Newton was looking far less than super through his first 3 games of the season, averaging 189 passing yards with 2 touchdowns against 4 interceptions.  Then, week 4 against the putrid Patriots defense happened (316 yards passing and 3 touchdowns for a 33-30 shocker to win…on the road no less). Most pundits figured that it was the horrible Patriots defense that made Cam look good, then last week, Cam erupted for 355 yards and another 3 touchdowns to squeak out a win in Detroit.  The odd thing about the last game is 0 (yes zero) rushing yards from Cam.  He hadn’t been rushing much this year, but did have 44 yards against the Patriots, and usually you see plenty of yards from Cam in most every game he plays. The Panthers defense has been strong this year, ranking 5th in total yards allowed per game and ninth in points allowed. The defense will need to hold Wentz and the Eagles in check and Cam will need to take advantage of the Eagles weak secondary for the Panthers to pull this one out.

Stats the Panthers Like

Six out of the last seven Thursday night games have been decided by 5 points or less and these two team strengths matchup well between Carolina’s defense vs. Philadelphia’s offense. Since the game is being played in Carolina, it does give the edge to the Panthers in this one, but with the uncertainty in Cam’s game and the way Wentz has been playing, this could easily go the other way. On paper, this does look like a very evenly matched game.
