Bad Defense, Lots of Offense Expected Thursday Night

on Oct 4, 2017 | 0 comments

This Thursday Night Football game is unlike most other awkwardly arranged TNF matchups. This one has real shootout potential. Of course the Rams and 49ers threw up 80 unexpected points just a couple of weeks ago that no one saw coming, but this one has the benefit of foresight. This week, the New England Patriots travel to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to kick of the week’s games. And wow, do we get a doosy of a game this week with the game total currently sitting at 55 points.

The Patriots come into this game with the same usual cast of characters…Brady/Gronk and a bunch of other guys who always seem to get it done on offense.  This year it’s Chris Hogan and Brandin Cooks lighting up the passing game (along with Gronk of course), and a three-headed monster in the backfield of Mike Gillislee, James White and Dion Lewis. Bill Belichick always knows how to squeeze the most possible offense out of his player personnel and this game should be no different. On the other end of the spectrum, what is up with that putrid New England defense?  They have allowed 300+ passing yards in every game this season, and that includes such vaunted quarterbacks as the “usually play it safe” Alex Smith, the launching of Deshaun Watson’s career and the ghost of Cam Newton. This Patriots defense is currently last in the league in yards allowed per game, giving up a whopping 60 more than the Indianapolis Colts (60 more yards. Than the Colts. Per game!), so yeah that’s pretty bad.

Stats the Patriots Like

The Buccaneers on the other hand (or the same hand) also have a defensive problem, as they are currently the 3rd worst team in the NFL in yards allowed per game, and they have played the Bears, Vikings and Giants, not exactly offensive juggernauts (not the worst offenses either, but you get the idea). Jameis Winston has put up some nice yardage totals the last couple of weeks (328 and 332) and looks to continue that trend against this weak Patriots defense.

Stats the Buccaneers Like

The smart money is on this game going over the 55 points projected with plenty of fireworks to be enjoyed by an enthralled nation of football fans. Also expect both Brady and Winston to eclipse the 300 passing yard mark and at least 2 receivers and one tight end in this game going over 100 yards. Make sure your fantasy football lineups are set with as many Patriots and Bucs players as possible, pay up in DFS to get some shares of this game, call the neighbors over to watch with you, just don’t miss this game! Of course, now this will probably be a defensive slog with kickers accounting for all of the points in a 12-9 game, nah, it’s gonna be a shootout!
