The Super Exciting Battle for California

on Sep 21, 2017 |

It’s another Thursday Night Football barn burner to kick off week 3 in the NFL! Ok, well it’s not the most exciting game on the schedule, but hey at least the teams will be wearing their rush colors (don’t adjust your tv sets) and that’s always exciting. Right? The Los Angeles Rams (1-1) travel north to take on the San Franciso 49ers (0-2).  Both of these teams appear to have improved their play since last year (really, they could only go up), and this should be a close game as the line indicates with the Rams favored at -2.5.

The Rams have gotten off to a solid start this year with improved offensive production. Jared Goff has had a couple of nice games and Todd Gurley has been a touchdown machine so far.  The addition of Sammy Watkins and rookie Cooper Kupp have provided more consistency in the passing game, keeping opposing defenses honest (ie: it’s not as easy to stack the box against Gurley when you have a couple of wideouts who can make plays).  The Rams, and their out of this world defense, stomped the hapless Colts in week 1, then they made it close against the Redskins in week 2, all signs appear to be pointing up for this team.

Stats the Rams Like

The normally awful 49ers have been just a tad less awful this year with new head coach Kyle Shanahan at the helm. The team got blown out by a good looking Panthers squad in week 1, scoring a meager 3 points. It all seemed rather hopeless in Seattle (see what I did there? no?, never mind) for week 2, but the team’s defense showed up and they actually led with just over 7 minutes to go in the game (hey, that hadn’t happened in like forever ago at Seattle). But the amazing (it’s Superman? superbird? super professor maybe?, ok I’m not good at nicknames) Russell Wilson avoided two sacks and found Paul Richardson in the end-zone to bail out the Seahawks with a 12-9 win. Carlos Hyde has looked very good the first 2 games, the defense has looked better and Hoyer has been looking, uh well, looking for someone to throw the ball too.  To be fair, Garçon has done ok against a couple of tough defenses, he just hasn’t been the reception machine that we’ve all come to expect.

Stats the 49ers Like

This game is likely to be low-scoring (39.5 is the lowest total for the week…and Baltimore is playing Jacksonville!…in London!!). It also doesn’t help that this is on Thursday night where scoring is normally down and play can be sloppy, plus both of these teams are not exactly offensive juggernauts. A lack of scoring probably plays into the 49ers favor since they are a little more challenged with the scoring part of their game anyway.  Maybe the defense can score
